The Cuban capital hosted the 1st Meeting of Tourism Ministers from the Great Caribbean, aimed at boosting the development of the leisure industry in the region.
The meeting, sponsored by the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), highlighted the importance of improving tourist offers to increase revenues and create jobs.
Participants in the meeting, including the ministers from all 25 ACS member countries, debated such topics as multidestination, the quality of Caribbean tourism, travelers' safety, the need for strong relations and air politics.
The forum, which was preceded by the 16th Meeting of the Special Committee on Sustainable Tourism of the Association of Caribbean States, concluded with the signing of the Havana Declaration, which contains the general strategies to boost tourism in the Great Caribbean.
A steady increase in tourist arrivals in the region demands appropriate regional strategies, considering that the Caribbean received 50 million foreign travelers in 2005.
