The 18th International Congress, Orthopedics 2006, opens Tuesday at the Plaza America convention center in Varadero, Cuba.
Some 340 Cuban orthopedic specialists and more that 40 world experts have gathered in Varadero, in the province of Matanzas, to discuss scientific advances in their medical field and exchange experiences.
During the first two days of the meeting, delegates will be involved in pre-congress courses about knee osteoarthritis and external fixators, which is a method of holding broken bones in place. Cuba is a world leader in the use of that technique,
Dr. Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras, head of the organizing committee, is expected to deliver the opening words of the Congress Thursday morning.
This will give way to scientific sessions scheduled for the following two days.
Orthopedics 2006 includes a Symposium on Natural Disasters that will be held next September 23. Participants will make an assessment of the experiences of Cuban experts in the treatment of victims of the October,2004, earthquake in Pakistan. They will analyze the surgical solutions applied by the Cuban doctors in extreme situations and under very harsh weather conditions.
