The debut of the National Ballet of Cuba in the Grand Theatre of the Cairo Opera house in Egypt was highly successful. They gave a brilliant performance of the production The magic of dance, an anthology of excerpts from the most famous works in their classical and romantic repertoire.
After repeated applause for the performance of the Cuban dancers, the presence of Alicia Alonso on stage was received with a tremendous standing ovation, by the enthusiastic audience that filled that most prestigious Egyptian theatre.
At the conclusion of the performance, Alicia Alonso was awarded the emblem of the Egyptian National Cultural Center, the Opera House, a distinction instituted in 1988. The recognition was received by the Cuban artist from Abdel Moneim Kamel, president of the opera houses of Egypt.
