Announced in Barbican Hall’s webpage of London, as the Godfather of the Cuban Nueva Trova Movement, the singer and composer Silvio Rodríguez will offer a one-night concert in that cultural center next September 22nd, thus confirmed the digital version of the Cuban newspaper International Granma.
Promoted by the Music Fund for Cuba, a solidarity foundation with the Island, the presentation will collect money destined to repair the Havanian Theater Miramar and several British artists are invited to perform as well, some of them are the guitarist John Williams, Madness and Cuban Ska, among others.
Early last August, during the launching in Havana of Érase que se era, his latest album, Rodríguez said in advance that he will sing two or three songs with the unique accompaniment of Williams. The musician, as Silvio told back then has donated musical instruments to Cuban art schools, mission that unites him to the Music Fund for Cuba since its creation in year 2001.
The performance, which has sold-out all capacities, will be the first of the Cuban troubadour in the United Kingdom since the beginnings of the 90’s and it’s included within a program that Barbican entitles A Part of the World and Roots.
The author of Ojalá will go up on stage with the trio Trovarroco, the percussionist Oliver Valdés and the flutist Niurka González, ensemble with which he has worked for several years and with which he is now carrying a tour through Spain.
Galicia was the first city where Rodríguez began the tour in the Iberian nation later last month. Of the four recitals he had scheduled in that province, Silvio only offered a free concert “in solidarity” with the region, affected by fires that scorched the 10% of that territory.
Bilbao, Seville, San Sebastián, Pamplona, Zaragoza, and Madrid, among other, are the cities included in the Rodríguez’s itinerary.
This is the second time this year that Silvio travels to Spain. The first one was in April to collect the Latin Award to an entire life of achievements.
