The Latin American who has lived longest with a heart transplant, 20 years, Cuban Hector Despaigne Guillen has died from septic shock.
Despaigne was first attended at Las Tunas Hospital for a valvular cardiopathy that caused abnormal heart growth. At 15 he was sent to Havana Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital where he received the heart transplant on March 29, 1986.
Since then, he received a specialized care from both Las Tunas and Havana cardiologists, which enabled to live a normal life for 20 years.
