The Spanish consortium RIU Hotels is expected to close this year's operations with 30 tourist establishments in the Caribbean, totaling 14,000 rooms in the region.
According to sources from the sector, the company owns 28 hotels and plans to inaugurate the RIU Palace Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) and ClubHotel RIU Vallarta (Mexico) in 2006.
The Spanish chain opened its first hotel in the Caribbean in 1991, when it inaugurated the RIU Taíno in the Dominican Republic.
Since then, the company has opened eight establishments in the Dominican Republic, two in Florida, two in Cuba, 11 in Mexico, three in Jamaica, one in Bahamas and one in Aruba.
The consortium also plans to open new hotels in 2007, especially in Mexico and Cape Verde.
RIU Hotels owns 110 establishments in 18 countries, ranking 26th among the main hotel chains in the world.
