The Empresa de Perforación y Extracción de Petróleo del Centro, one of Cuba's major oil companies, has reported an increase in production this year.
During the first five months of 2005, the Cuban firm produced 204 million cubic meters of gas, accounting for a 0.5-percent increase of its plan.
The company operates oil fields in the northern coast of western Matanzas province, especially in the outskirts of the city, Varadero and Cárdenas.
Extraction of the gas accompanying oil is one of the most relevant actions in the country's energy strategy, since the fuel is used domestically and to generate electricity.
In that regard, the company is working on the enlargement of the ENERGAS project, including the creation of facilities to produce electricity from gas.
In addition, the experts said that using gas prevents atmospheric pollution, thus contributing to protecting the environment.
