The exploitation of mica and cyanite fields on Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) allows for diversification of Cuba's mining industry.
The said minerals, which are found in the region, contribute to reducing imports, thus saving financial resources to the country.
According to experts, mica can be used to make electrodes and improve paints.
Cyanite contributes iron, alumina and silica in cement production, so the Isla de la Juventud special municipality will become the major supplier of that raw material.
In addition, the region is expected to gain ground in the domestic market as a major supplier of silica sand for concrete and high-alumina kaolin to produce firebricks.
