A four-wicket haul from Everest fast bowler Leon Scott and two from Malteenoes leg-spinner Dennis Legay propelled Demerara to a 63-run victory over Berbice in the final match of the Castrol Under-15 Inter-County Competition. However, given that Berbice had a higher net run rate, they were named overall winners of the competition.
Batting first, Demerara managed to reach 165 for nine off their allotted 50 overs, at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground. Leading the way for the home team were Troy Nurse who scored 30 (two fours off, 63 balls) and Ameer Khan who finished with 25 (two fours off 57 balls). Also chipping in were Rajendra Ramkelawan who scored 16, and Dennis Legay who made a purposeful 19 at the end.
Bowling for Berbice, off-spinner Steven Latcha finished with three wickets for 18 runs, while leg-spinner Jermaine Ramsay finished with three wickets for 20 runs. Berbice, in their innings, folded for 102 off 32.5 overs. The mainstay of the team was Jonathan Foo who scored 39, and except for Anthony Bramble (14) and Sylvasen Kalimootoo (13), no other batsman reached double figures.
After the match, the national selectors named a 14-man squad to represent Guyana at the regional competition which begins on March 28 in Trinidad, and a 12-man squad to represent Guyana against an English School Boys' team, whose tour also commences on March 28. For the regional competition, Berbice captain Steven Latcha was named captain, while Demerara captain Roy Karran was named vice-captain. The other players are: Norwayne Fredericks, Leon Williams, Eugene La Fleur, Jonathan Foo, Keno Gravesande, Jetendra Sookdeo, Denver Greaves, Totoram Bishun, Oyona Sampson, Leon Scott, Dennis Legay and Dillon Heyliger.
