The building, which belonged to a wealthy slave owner, Joaquín Gómez, was built in 1836 following the design of the Palace of the Captains General, and opened as a hotel in 1885.

The building's principal theatre is the Sala Garcia Lorca, an intimate 1500 seat auditorium with five balconies and good acoustics.
