Valuable Historic Funds at Pinar del Río Archive
The facility, located in Cuba's westernmost province, has rooms and laboratories to preserve valuable documents.
The texts are initially taken to the so-called quarantine room, and after undergoing a process of cleaning, drying and preservation, they are isolated for a certain period to prevent insects and fungi from damaging the documents.
The center is the only one of its kind in the country equipped with a laboratory to analyze samples of fungi, some of which are very harmful to human health and force archive officials to isolate the documents for up to five years.
The damaged documents are taken to the restoration workshop, where they are restored to their original conditions. The oldest texts are digitalized to avoid further damage.
