UN Commission Reaffirms Importance of Reproductive Health
During its closing period of sessions, countries attending the meeting pleaded for their call to be part of efforts in order to wipe out poverty, something seen as essential for improving mothers" health, reducing infant mortality, promoting gender equality and fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
A related resolution stresses that the full implementation of Cairo Action Programme of 1004 is an essential contribution to achieve UN development targets.
The current US administration has opposed the consensus reached in 1994 and blocked reaffirmation stands here in order to try impose its conservative agenda.
But recent regional conferences in Bangkok, Geneva, Dakar and San Juan have ignored Washington’s stand.
The UN commission approved a separate text calling for governments to take measures to increase childrens" and adults’ capacity to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS by providing access to sexual and reproductive health care and prevention.
