No Tetanus Cases Reported in Cuba in 2004
Experts said that Cuba has eradicated several diseases, including poliomyelitis, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, rubella and mumps.
In addition, cases of tubercular meningitis in children under one year of age, and neonatal tetanus have been eradicated as well.
Tetanus is a serious infections disease of the nervous system and can result in the patient's death if it affects the respiratory muscles.
The spores of the bacillus Clostridium tetani, which causes the disease, are found in street dirt and get into the body through wounds, open lesions or serious burns, or due to non-sterile shots.
Currently, the Cuban people benefit from a 10-vaccine immunization program that protects them against 13 diseases.
