New Botanical Garden Opens in Western Cuba
The facility has 1,300 plant species and covers 62 hectares, where the most evolved flora and the oldest plants on the planet live together.
According to experts, the garden will have more than 6,000 species in a near future. The plants will be distributed in three main collections, including one on Pinar del Río's flora.
Among the garden's main attractions is Mount Ewe, which is dedicated to Afro-Cuban deities and cults, so it holds such species as ceiba (Ceiba P. Mill), poplar, ciguaraya (Trichilia havanensis Jacq) and rompezaragüey, among others.
The garden also holds plants from many countries and latitudes, including the maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba), which grows in a remote mountain in China.
The development of botanical gardens contributes to improving the people's environmental culture.
