HIV-AIDS Tests Promoted in Guantánamo

Local health authorities pointed out that 30,000 blood tests were carried out from January to November 2004 to detect HIV positive cases or patients suffering from the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The health experts said that this figure exceeds by 2,000 the number of tests carried out in 2003.

The study included patients in hospitals who agreed to be tested, blood donors, foreigners and people suffering from kidney failure.

The tests also included pregnant women and hemophiliacs. The latter are patients who suffer from a hereditary blood disease characterized by the inability of blood to clot, or coagulate, leading to hemorrhage, or excessive bleeding, even from minor injuries.
