GM Lázaro Bruzón Concludes Outstanding Performance In Wijk Ann Zee
In the meantime, Cuban GM Lázaro Bruzón - who places 46th in the world ranking with an ELO rating of 2642 units - finished with 6.5 points in 13 rounds sharing the eighth spot with Ukrainian GM Ruslan Ponomariov (16-2700) and Dutch GM Loek Van Welly (24-2697).
The performance of Bruzón can be described as excellent taking into account that he was the player with the lowest ELO rating of the contest and that, out of the 14 participants, eight are in the Top Ten of the world ranking of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Leko (5-2749) was followed in the standings by Indian GM Viswanathan Anad (2-2786) who placed second with eight units and by Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov (3-2757) who accumulated 7.5 in the third spot. The fourth place was shared by Russian GMs Vladimir Kramnik (4-2754) and Alexander Grischuk (13-2710), Hungarian GM Judith Polgar (9-2728) and English GM Michael Adams (7-2741) with seven units apiece.
Russian GM Peter Svidler (8-2735), English GM Nigel Short (29-2674), Russian GM Alexander Morozevich (6-2741) and Dutch GM Ivan Sokolov (20-2685) placed from spots 11th to the 14th with six, 5.5, 4.5 and 3.5 units, respectively.
