Drought Leads to Transfer of Cattle in Eastern Cuba
According to Manuel Marino Cordovi, a local representative from the Ministry of Agriculture, 3,991 cows are being fed on sugar cane in fields which the Sugar Ministry intends to eliminate, while the rest are relocated in areas belonging to ranching companies based in the province’s eight municipalities.
The situation has turned even more difficult for ranchers as huge quantities of grass must be cut and transported in order to feed the cattle, and water is being hauled by tanker trucks to 304 dairies.
Marino noted that 1,679 water sources which supplied ranching operations have gone dry. To counter the situation, he added that 83 new wells have been dug and that another 55 are still under construction in places where water is insufficient and very far under the surface.
