Cuba Reports Record Low Infant Mortality Rate

According to statistics from the health sector, the Caribbean Island reported 5.8 deaths per every 1,000 live births in 2004, one of the lowest rates in the world.

Statistics from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) show that Cuba is among the 36 countries in the world with the lowest infant mortality rate.

Denmark, Japan, Norway, Iceland, Singapore and Sweden have reported less than four deaths per every 1,000 live births, while the United States has an infant mortality rate of 7.

The best result in Cuba was reported in central Sancti Spiritus province, which had 3.3 deaths, while another seven provinces had an infant mortality rate lower than the national average.

In 2004, 127,062 children were born in Cuba, and only 735 deaths of children under one year of age were reported, mainly due to perinatal problems and congenital malformations.
