Cuba, New Member of UNESCO World Heritage Committee
The inclusion of Cuba, according to the international institution's sources, is an acknowledgement of the great efforts of Cuban organizations and authorities to preserve and promote their cultural legacy.
There were 29 candidates for the 11 vacant positions on the 21-member committee.
This election is unique in that candidatures are not previously negotiated among the regions; rather the selection is open, general and secret.
Peru was also among those selected to be a member of the committee for the next four years.
