Cuba Equipped with Modern Earthquake Detection

Seismic activity was reported as normal in the Cuban archipelago during 2004. Experts reported that eight tremors were felt, the strongest on December 14, which had its epicenter near the Cayman Islands.

In Cuba there are 11 zones with seismic activity, although the most significant is known as the Santiago-Baracoa area in the southeastern partof the country. There is also Chivirico, Cabo Cruz-Pilon, Moa-Purial,
Guantanamo-Maisi and Cayman.

Besides its scientific importance, the work of the National Center ofSeismic Research, located in Santiago de Cuba, includes the social mission to help alleviate the possible effects of a high intensity earthquake onhuman life and the economy.
