Cuba Chooses Best Athletes in 2004
The best male athlete was Mario Kindelán, who won his second Olympic gold medal in Athens and is considered the world's best amateur boxer.
In the collective sport category, Ariel Pestano, catcher of the Cuban baseball team, was chosen the most outstanding player, while that team was selected the best of the year.
The best female athlete was volleyball player Zoila Barros, who was a key element in the team that won the bronze medal at the Athens games.
The list of the best ten athletes includes Yandro Quintana (freestyle wrestling), Yumileidi Cumbá (athletics) and boxers Yan Barthelemi, Yuriolkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solís and Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Other outstanding athletes were Leinier Domínguez (chess), Yanelis Labrada (tae kwon do), Yipsi Moreno (athletics) and Daima Beltrán (judo).
