Cuba Boosts Tests for Congenital Diseases
This year, central Sancti Spiritus province will benefit from new services to detect congenital metabolic problems.
According to experts, the new technology will allow detecting such diseases as biotinidase deficiency, galactosemia and suprarenal hyperplasia, which have low incidence in Cuba but can cause mental retardation and other syndromes.
The process, which consists of taking blood samples from children during the first days of life, will allow experts to prescribe a treatment before clinical symptoms appear.
It will also allow them to administer the appropriate treatment to correct a defect and guarantee that the children can live a healthy life.
By detecting congenital diseases, the province expands its diagnostic levels, since local experts had already carried out research on phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism.
